Lifetime Achievements 1996

Dr. NK Yong was a cardiothoracic and general surgeon by profession and a wine collector by passion. He and his wife are enthusiastic wine and food lovers, well-known in the wine circles of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, California, Australia and New Zealand. Their favorite hobby is travelling to visit their vintner and chef friends in wineries and restaurants around the world.

Dr. NK Yong has been the wine columnist for The Business Times since 1988. The distinguished wine connoisseur was honored by the French government with the Officier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole for his services French wines and awarded the IWFS Andre Simon Silver Medal in 1989 and was further awarded the IWFS Andre Simon Gold medal in 1998. He served as the Chairman of the World Council of Management of the International Wine and Food Society (IWFS) from October 1992 to October 1996. In 2004, he was honored by the President of France with the title of Officier de l’Ordre National du Mérite. In addition, he also conducts wine courses for SOPEXA in a regular basis.

It is well-known that Dr. N K Yong has a huge wine cellar, and the reason for it being so huge is be-cause it had been converted from an Olympic sized swimming pool in 1997. The cellar is two meters deep and houses an array of fine wines from all over the world.
