The Society of Bacchus America

The Society of Bacchus America Founded in 1955 by Rene Ragusa, well-known New Orleans sommelier and Merlin “Scoop” Kennedy, news editor and wine columnist for the New Orleans Times. The Society is dedicated to the memory of Cesar Ritz, the legendary restaurateur and hotelier. Ever since 1959, when Scoop Kennedy was awarded the first Gourmet of the Year Award by his New Orleans chapter one individual from North America has been selected annually by a committee of past Gourmets of the Year for this honor.
